In seguito ad un attacco terroristico da parte di alcuni animalisti in un laboratorio di ricerca sugli animali nel Regno Unito, l'intera isola britannica rimane vittima di una pandemia virale che rende le
persone violente ed aggressive, portandole ad uccidere qualunque forma di vita.
Ventotto giorni dopo, Jim, un corriere irlandese, si risveglia in ospedale, dopo un coma dovuto ad un incidente sul motorino durante una consegna. Inconsapevole del disastro che ha colpito l'Inghilterra e gli
stati confinanti, cerca di raggiungere la propria casa in una Londra completamente deserta. Dopo essere venuto a contatto con alcuni "infetti" viene salvato da due sopravvissuti, Selena e Mark, che gli spiegano
i fatti accaduti nell'ultimo mese.
