Zes jaar na Guantanamo Bay leven Harold en Kumar ver van elkaar bij twee heel verschillende families. Tot Harold plots tijdens de vakantieperiode voor de deur van Kumar staat met een mysterieus pakje in de hand. Vanaf dan lijkt alles weer in orde. Tot Harold de kerstboom van Kumars schoonvader per ongeluk in brand steekt. De twee willen het probleem oplossen en reizen door New York om de perfecte kerstboom te vinden waardoor ze opnieuw in de meest hilarische situaties terechtkomen.
