Il professore di medicina e ricercatore Eddie Jessup conduce su se stesso degli esperimenti restando in sospensione dentro una vasca di deprivazione sensoriale, ossia in un ambiente isolato per ottenere la massima assenza di percezioni esterne. Eliminando ogni elemento di distrazione, egli ritiene di poter condurre un'analisi introspettiva della propria coscienza, un vero viaggio esplorativo nel proprio passato. Il ricercatore viene a sapere che nel Centroamerica gli sciamani utilizzano una droga allucinogena, la quale conferirebbe agli assuntori la capacit� di perlustrare una sorta di memoria collettiva ancestrale. Entusiasta delle esperienze drogastiche, Eddie unisce l'uso di tale sostanza stupefacente a quello della vasca d’isolamento per espandere il suo viaggio oltre la propria origine, via via attraverso la filogenesi degli ominidi (trovandosi persino trasformato in un australopiteco)........
