Het verhaal gaat over drie eekhoorns. De rebelse Alvin, de lange genie en uitvinder Simon en de veelvraat Theodor. Alle drie worden opgevoed door Dave Seville. Hun grootste droom is om een van de bekendste rapgroepen aller tijden te worden. Alvin en de rest proberen alles op alles te zetten om zo snel mogelijk beroemd te worden. Op een dag krijgen zij een kans om een album uit te laten brengen, maar Dave daarentegen heeft zijn bedenkingen. Ze proberen Dave over te halen om alsnog toestemming te geven, zodat hun droom werkelijkheid wordt:
