Voici sans doute l'album de Caravan esthétiquement le plus proche du genre progressif, bien qu'il soit important de souligner qu'il ne reste ici pour ainsi dire quasiment plus rien des caractéristiques liées au style Canterbury qui l'avait vu naître. Certes, David Sinclair est de retour au bercail - mais dans la souffrance - et cela s'est joué à peu de choses alors que le groupe ne s'en sortait plus dans son jeu des chaises musicales, au point que cela a bien failli tourner en eau de boudin... Le Caravan nouveau ne compte plus dans ses rangs que les frères Hastings ...

Voici sans doute l'album de Caravan esthétiquement le plus proche du genre progressif, bien qu'il soit important de souligner qu'il ne reste ici pour ainsi dire quasiment plus rien des caractéristiques liées au style Canterbury qui l'avait vu naître. Certes, David Sinclair est de retour au bercail - mais dans la souffrance - et cela s'est joué à peu de choses alors que le groupe ne s'en sortait plus dans son jeu des chaises musicales, au point que cela a bien failli tourner en eau de boudin... Le Caravan nouveau ne compte plus dans ses rangs que les frères Hastings et le batteur Richard Coughlan, l'ancien Sinclair chassant l'autre, parti fonder Hatfield and The North... À leurs côtés, des tas de nouveaux arrivants dont l'élément le plus remarquable est sans conteste le violoniste Geoff Richardson. Ses interventions mesurées confèrent au disque son identité si particulière, ses points culminants étants "Be Alright / Chance of a Lifetime" et bien sûr la longue suite instrumentale, "L'Auberge du Sanglier", avec orchestration symphonique, cordes, cuivres et tout et tout, véritable apothéose de cet album. Si les trois premiers Caravan possèdent une homogénéité irréprochable, c'est sur "For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night" que le groupe se met le plus en danger. Il essaye des choses, et pas toujours du meilleur goût, nous délivrant une première face relativement atroce ("Surprise, Surprise" ou "Hoedown", quand même mieux que le titre homonyme signé ELP). Je comprendrais pafaitement que cette entrée en matière assez désastreuse puisse en décourager plus d'un, mais la qualité des fantastiques titres évoquées plus haut, auxquels j'adjoins encore "C'thlu Thlu" et "Memory Lain, Hugh / Headloss", justifient un tel sacrifice. Dommage que les meilleures plages de ce disque n'aient pas été couplées aux meilleurs titres de "Waterloo Lily" ("Nothing At All", "The Love in Your Eye" et la plage titre), sans quoi nous aurions tenu là, entre nos mains fébriles, sans doute la plus belle réalisation de Caravan.
