På ett gathörn på nedre Manhattan lever Jimmy Mirikitani, en japansk konstnär i 80-års åldern med ett märkligt levnadsöde. Med den koreanske ägarens goda minne har han gjort sig en boplats vid butiken där han på dagarna ägnar sig åt sin konst och på nätterna kryper ner under en presenning. Han lever på att sälja sina bilder och kommer ofta i samspråk med sina grannar, de boende i kvarteret. Den 11 september 2001 mörknar himlen, luften fylls med giftiga gaser och livet för Jimmy Mirikitani tar en helt ny vändning.
