Nel 1969 Charlie Haden assemblò 11 musicisti (inclusi la compositrice–arrangiatrice Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri e Roswell Rudd) per formare la leggendaria Liberation Music Orchestra e per incidere un disco omonimo che è diventato una pietra miliare del jazz.
Il disco fu una sincera affermazione in favore della libertà dall’oppressione e dalla repressione ed una risposta alla guerra in Vietnam. “Dopo i bombardamenti in Cambogia – afferma Haden - pensai di avere il dovere di fare qualcosa. Conoscevo tutte quelle vecchie canzoni legate alla guerra civile spagnola, chiamai Carla e le proposi di trarne ispirazione per un album che denunciasse la tragedia di ciò che l’Amministrazione americana stava combinando nel mondo”.
Nel 1984 Charlie riorganizzò la Liberation Music Orchestra con molti dei membri originali: Carla Bley, Paul Motian, Don Cherry, Dewey Redman e Michael Mantler. Al gruppo si aggiunsero volti nuovi, tra cui Mick Goodrick e Jim Pepper. La Liberation Music Orchestra di Charlie Haden completò la sua trilogia di registrazioni nel 1991 con Dream Keeper, disco che ottenne un eccezionale riconoscimento vincendo come “Album dell’anno” il sondaggio Down Beat sia dei critici che dei lettori, ottenendo inoltre una nomination al Grammy Award e comparendo in più di 30 classifiche dei migliori 10 album jazz del 1991 stilate in diverse parti del mondo.

Charles Edward Haden (Shenandoah, 6 agosto 1937) è uno dei più importanti contrabbassisti jazz contemporanei e deve la sua fama principalmente alla lunga collaborazione con il sassofonista Ornette Coleman.
Haden è nato a Shenandoah in Iowa ed è cresciuto in una famiglia di musicisti, che spesso si esibivano iniseme alla radio suonando musica country e canzoni folk americane. Haden debuttò professionalmente come cantante quando aveva due anni, e continuò a cantare con la sua famiglia finché non contrasse, a 14 anni, una forma lieve di poliomielite. La poliomielite gli danneggiò i muscoli della gola e le corde vocali e il risultato fu che Haden diventò incapace di controllare l'intonazione. Pochi anni prima, Haden aveva iniziato a interessarsi al jazz, e iniziò a suonare il contrabbasso del fratello maggiore.
Haden si trasferì a Los Angeles a metà degli anni '50 e cominciò rapidamente a suonare professionalmente, collaborando col pianista Hampton Hawes e il sassofonista Art Pepper.
Diventò famoso suonando con Ornette Coleman alla fine degli anni '50, forse raggiungendo l'apice con l'album The Shape of Jazz to Come. Questo album fu molto controverso al tempo, e lo stesso Haden sottolineò che il concetto di armolodia, che era alla base della musica di Coleman, era così difficile per lui che all'inizio si rassegnò a ripetere le linee di Coleman al basso. Fu solo successivamente che acquistò abbastanza confidenza per suonare linee proprie durante i concerti.
Accanto alla sua associazione con Coleman, Haden fu anche un membro del trio di Keith Jarrett e dell'"American quartet" dal 1967 al 1976 con Paul Motian e Dewey Redman.
Continuò come leader della Liberation Music Orchestra negli anni '70. In gran parte arrangiata da Carla Bley, la loro musica era molto sperimentale, e coniugava per la prima volta il free jazz con la musica politica, nello specifico, il primo album della LMO si concentrava sulla guerra civile spagnola. Questa esplorazione tematica di generi tipicamente non considerati standard del jazz divenne una caratteristica distintiva dell'approccio di Haden con il suo Quartet West.

Carla Bley nasce ad Oakland in California ma già dall'età di sedici anni si trasferisce a New York, per entrare in contatto con l'ambiente jazz più importante all'epoca. A 21 anni si sposa con il pianista jazz Paul Bley, del quale terrà il nome da sposata, sebbene la coppia abbia in seguito divorziato. Già a partire dal 1960 sue composizioni sono eseguite da diversi jazzisti di fama come George Russell, Jimmy Giuffrè, Art Farmer e lo stesso Paul Bley. Diventa in seguito importante figura del movimento Free Jazz degli anni sessanta: collabora con la Liberation Music Orchestra di Charlie Haden e con artisti di diverso stampo come Steve Lacy, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, Jack Bruce, Robert Wyatt e con il batterista dei Pink Floyd Nick Mason.
Nel corso degli anni settanta fonda una big band, tuttora attiva, che porta il suo nome e che l'ha vista esibirsi sui palchi di tutto il mondo. Tale big band si rifà all'insegnamento delle orchestre di Gil Evans e dell'ultimo Duke Ellington potendo contare sull'apporto di molti valenti musicisti, provenienti dai più disparati contesti musicali. Da diversi anni suo importante partner musicale e di vita è il bassista elettrico Steve Swallow. In Italia ha lavorato con i trombettisti Paolo Fresu e Enrico Rava e con il trombonista Gianluca Petrella.
