Michele and Ioan are two young men looking for a stable job, a task which seems endless and every day more distant. Lionello is over forty, and eventhough he has been fired from the cleaning company at Termini station, he goes on pretending he is still working, in order to avoid the humiliation of being unemployed. Ioan, a young Romanian imigrant having fled his country because of the revolution, meets Lionello at the train station. Ioan rents a room in Lionello's house and the two friends dream of opening up a restaurant together by the Danube. However, one day Ioan is spotted by an utilitarian photographer woman who will end up turning him into a cover boy sensation...
Ioan, 23 anni, lascia la Romania per cercare fortuna in Italia in compagnia di un amico. Arriva però da solo a Roma e viene aiutato da Michele che lavora alla stazione. L'uomo lo ospita e se ne innamora anche se il ragazzo sembra non accorgersene. La loro vita non è semplice: i lavori di Michele sono precari e Ioan è immigrato irregolarmente. Ma una donna (oltre alla frustrata padrona di casa interpretata con il solito acume da Luciana Littizzetto) entra nella loro vita provocando un inatteso cambiamento.
Era dal 1996 con Come mi vuoi che Carmine Amoroso mancava dal grande schermo. Vi ritorna ora con un film che ha subito la falcidia dei finanziamenti pubblici (che prima c'erano e poi sono stati brutalmente decurtati) ma che mostra come in Italia si possa ancora fare cinema indipendente di buon livello. Con un 'però'.
Ci sono film le cui storie (una volta consolidate) non dovrebbero mai consentire ai personaggi di tornare a prendere un treno o di passare un casello di autostrada e Cover Boy è uno di questi. Proviamo a spiegare. Grazie anche alla splendida (e premiata) fotografia di Paolo Ferrari e al montaggio di Luca Manes, Amoroso riesce a raccontare con grande sensibilità il rapporto che si instaura tra due uomini dalla vita precaria riuscendo a farci percepire l'incontro tra due modi di affrontare la vita senza cadere nella facile sociologia.
Collocando per di più la vicenda al Mandrione (di pasoliniana e rosselliniana memoria) ci mostra uno spazio periferico in cui sorgono ancora baracche ed edifici abusivi, divenuto oggi meta di molti extracomunitari. Anche il sentimento che Michele nutre per Ioan è cesellato da Luca Lionello con umanità e sensibilità. Però… nel momento in cui (senza anticiparvi troppo della vicenda per non togliervi il gusto della visione) uno dei due lascia Roma il film perde la compattezza costruita sino ad allora per imboccare una via già battuta da altri dissolvendo l'atmosfera costruita sino a quel punto. Questo dispiace un po' perché sicuramente ad Amoroso il senso del fare cinema non manca.
