Het is 1964. De Oost-Europese Selma (Björk) emigreert met haar zoon Gene naar Amerika. Ze werkt dag en nacht in de fabriek voor het bestaan van haar zoon.
Selma ziet slecht en heeft een erfelijke ziekte waarbij ze uiteindelijk blind zal worden.
Gene heeft deze ziekte ook. Selma spaart haar geld om een toekomstige oogoperatie voor Gene te betalen. Desondanks heeft Selma genoeg levensenergie.
Elke avond repeteert ze haar rol 'Maria' voor de musical 'Sound of Music' in een theater. Hoewel ze niet goed kan zien, gaat ze ook graag naar de film.
Vriendin Kathy gaat dan vaak mee om Selma te vertellen wat er op het scherm te zien is.
In de glamourwereld van films en theater kan Selma haar eigen leven even vergeten en voor een moment gelukkig zijn.
