Tim (Paul Rudd) heeft een functie als directielid en zijn baas is erg tevreden over hem. Er staat hem zelfs een promotie te wachten.
Maar Tim moet eerst wel de perfecte gast vinden voor het maandelijkse etentje, ''het diner voor idioten'', georganiseerd door zijn baas.
En dat lukt hem. Wanneer hij echter in IRS-medewerker Barry (Steve Carell) de grootste onnozele idioot ooit gevonden
blijkt te hebben lijkt het etentje iets anders te verlopen dan voorheen.
Barry lijkt het te presteren om het leven te ru�neren van iedereen die ook maar een paar minuten in zijn gezelschap verkeert.
