Renzo Calabrese - un medico trentenne originario di una modesta famiglia piccolo-borghese -, incontra Margherita, bella irrequieta e aperta al femminismo. Lui, che le ha offerto un passaggio in automobile in una strada di campagna senese, se ne innamora dopo un po' (l'ha trovata in fuga e nei guai) e, malgrado scontri vari, lei lo ricambia. Renzo si trova per lei implicato in avventure rischiose (tra l'altro la donna � stata per due anni l'amante di un brigatista), ma Renzo � fedele e geloso. Quando Rita gli dichiara francamente che con lui non raggiunge pi� il piacere, lui decide di tentare un rapporto con un altra giovane coppia reperita sugli annunci economici, ma gi� ai preliminari reagisce violentemente e tra Renzo e Margherita avviene un violento scontro. Il fatto � che Renzo conserva del vincolo coniugale e di tutti i suoi risvolti un'idea tradizionale e poi gli impegni sociali della bella Rita - che lavora ed � intanto passata dal ruolo di compagna a quello di moglie - non sono a lui graditi. Per cui compra un casale sperduto nella campagna, narcotizza e rapisce la consorte, le serra una caviglia con una lunga catena e, mentre quella lava, stira e serve in tavola, Renzo guida un trattore inneggiando alla sana vita bucolica, marito-padrone a tempo pieno. Finch� una sera cede alle preghiere della donna: le toglie la catena e sul letto di casa riceve una palettata in testa che lo lascia tramortito. Rita fugge, avverte la Polizia e il maschilista finisce in prigione. Tutto � raccontato alla Giuria nelle motivazioni, reazioni ed eventi dal difensore di Renzo - l'avvocato Carabba - il quale, malgrado la passione e la perizia dispiegate in Tribunale, non riesce ad evitare al proprio cliente una condanna a sette anni per ratto, sequestro e violenze psico fisiche. Renzo ne far� solo tre, per buona condotta. Poi, uscito, il reo torner� con Rita, prolificher� e invecchier� con lei, sempre litigando anche ai giardinetti davanti alla nipotina, innamorato, geloso e possessivo verso quella donna tempestosa, nel vincolo coniugale che incatena - questa volta tutti e due - fino alla morte.
Lorenzo Calabrese - a doctor comes from a modest thirty middle-class family - he met Margaret, beautiful restless and open to feminism.
