Tijdens een bezoek van een studentenklas aan een lokaal psychiatrisch ziekenhuis heeft de jonge psychologie studente Abby Jones een ijzingwekkende ontmoeting met de risicovolle patiënt Harmon Porter. Wanneer ze naar huis terugkeert voor een normale studieavond met twee vriendinnen, heeft ze nog geen idee van wat ze in Porter heeft losgemaakt. Later die avond steekt er een storm op waarbij Harmon ontvlucht en een spoor van dood en verderf achterlaat op zijn weg naar de nietsvermoedende Abby. Als de meiden slapen, neemt de storm een kwade wending die hun buurt in het duister hult en al snel zitten ze gevangen in Harmons web van terreur.
