A downloads is the number of how many times the torrent has been downloaded according to its tracker record
A seeder is a peer that has a complete copy of the torrent and still offers it for upload. The more seeders there are, the better the chances are for completion of the file
A leech is usually a peer who has a negative effect on the swarm by having a very poor share ratio - in other words, downloading much more than they upload. Most leeches are users on asymmetric internet connections who do not leave their BitTorrent client open to seed the file after their download has completed. However, some leeches intentionally avoid uploading by using modified clients or excessively limiting their upload speed. The term leech, however, can be used simply to describe a peer - or any client that does not have 100% of the data
A peer is one instance of a BitTorrent client running on a computer on the Internet that other clients connect to and transfer data. Usually a peer does not have the complete file, but only parts of it, however, peer can be used to refer to any participant in the swarm (in this case, also known as a client). Note that the colloquial definition of peer is anybody, leech or seed, involved in a torrent
A health (or avaiability) the number of full copies of the file available to the client. Each seeder adds 1.0 to this number, as they have one complete copy of the file. A connected peer with a fraction of the file available adds that fraction to the availability, if no other peer has this part of the file. (ie. a peer with 65.3% of the file downloaded increases the availability by 0.653, when two peers who both have the same 50% of the file downloaded and there is one seeder the availability is 1.5)

A disc, burned it at 4x and when I found out about the lockup, again at 1x with the same results. I'm guessing having the hard drive would avoid it then?
I doubt this has anything with it being played off the disc, but I just wanted to know in case it works fine off the Hard Drive (since I won't be burning it). I'm still downloading it, but after I've had a chance to test it on the hard drive I'll post a comment. A possible work around could be to use a game save (saved after that cut-scene) from a cheat device (like codebreaker), and see if that gets you past that cut-scene. That's if you have access to some kind of cheat device and know how to transfer the game save to your memory card. Does this happen before or after stage 5 begins?
Well, you can't save at the end of levels, you have to go from start to finish in one run, a la classic contra, codebreaker would probably have a save for everything unlocked but seeing as you can't save the game during or after each stage I doubt it.
As for where it happens in stage 5, immediatly after you beat the 2nd miniboss it just locks up for me, so after it starts. If the game does work on the hard drive, sucks for me 'cause I got a slim ps2 (I use swap magic) and we know there's no hard drive for the slim ps2.
Yeah, the game is in the .mdf format, you need to use alcohol 120%. Just download that and go to the image burning wizard (ctrl+b or File>Image Burning Wizard) and select the .mds file when it asks what image you'd like to record.
I noticed (a bit late)that the game is 776 megs unrared... a bit larger than what a CD can hold so maybe if you burn it on a DVD it'll work past the 5th stage. I wouldn't know since I don't have a DVD burner, but that's my guess as to what my problem was.
Yea I finally had a chance to test this game off the HDD. If the boss your talking about is the turtle shape type boss, that turns around to reveal a big face, then yea it gets stuck there for me too. I can still move around and shoot, but the game doesn't progress. Here is a picture of that boss just so you know exactly what he looks like: http://a248.e.akamai.net/f/248/5462/2h/images.gamezone.com/screens/19/9/7/s19907_ps2_6.jpg.
I've read that someone passed this level after making a full backup of it with clone cd. I really didn't want to waste a disc just to test this, but if I do and it works, I'll post the result.
Here's exactly what he said (in case you were wondering): "i just made a copy with clone cd and it worked flawless passed the 3er mission with no problems... i got the original cd and i made a backup".
The other people in the same forum that were having problems, said it was the 3rd level boss. This is what he said "I got the PAL dvd-rip of Contra: Shattered Soldier and it freezes at the end of stage 3. Anyone knows what it could be. I have a V3 Pal PS2 with a Magic 3 mod-chip.." So apparently it's not just the US NTSC version that has this problem.
Sorry about that.. forgot to say the first guy who got it to work isn't the same person that reported he had a PAL dvd-rip and got stuck at the end of stage 3.
This game has a partially corrupt file inside. Below is the report I get when testing the files inside the image file (.MDF/.MDS) using ISO Buster.
"Following files are located on locations that are unreadable.
Extracting them might prove difficult and the resulting files may contain errors.
>:\FILEDATA.BIN"
This file "FILEDATA.BIN" contains all the games main data. When I ran this game off my PS2 Hard Drive, it freezes just after beating the boss at the end of stage 3 (http://contra.classicgaming.gamespy.com/games/ss/ContraPS205.jpg). The same problem happens when running it off a DVD.
So if anyone has problems with this game, it's probably because of the FILEDATA.BIN file being partially corrupted.
