Theresa Osborne, die gescheiden is en alleen moet zorgen voor haar 10-jarige zoon, is niet van plan om ooit nog met een man een relatie aan te gaan. Wanneer ze op een dag op het strand een fles vindt met een hartstochtelijke nieuwsbrief, kan ze niet laten die te publiceren in de krant waarvoor ze werkt. En wanneer ze andere gelijkaardige brieven vindt, besluit ze op zoek te gaan naar de afzender ervan. Dat blijkt de weduwnaar Garret Blake te zijn, een hersteller van zeilboten, wiens vrouw op tragische wijze om het leven is gekomen. Het klikt meteen tussen beiden, maar Theresa verzwijgt dat ze zijn brieven gevonden heeft.
