In Brief: A young Columbian girl, struggling to make ends meet, accepts a job ferrying heroin in pellets into the United States. It's a risky job - should one of the pellets burst on the trip, a slow, painful death is certain. Maria Full of Grace is one of the most important films of the year.
In Full: What needs to be said about Maria Full of Grace enough to inspire a trip to the cinema can be neatly wrapped up into one sentence: Catalina Sandino Moreno is so good that, in her first ever acting job, she won seven awards and was nominated for Best Actress at this year's Oscars.
That sort of attention is more than I could possibly hope to match in this review. Simply, you can cast aside everything else that's so brilliantly great about this film and take note only of Moreno's powerful and masterful performance. And, considering how great the rest of the ingredients in this masterful mix are, that's saying something. I may very well be in love.
It's genuinely impressive that a first-timer can demonstrate such emotion, such depth, such, for want of a better word, experience. Subtitles take care of the dialogue being exchanged on screen, but with her performance Moreno communicates without words - she immediately sells the film, the concept, the struggle, the danger.
It's difficult to believe that Maria would fail without a powerful lead to carry it, for it's such a well told and beautifully complex film that even Catherine Zeta Jones would have trouble dragging it down, but Moreno's performance elevates an already great foundation to a skyscraping work of genius. Maria Full of Grace is one of the finest foreign-language films in a long time. One of the finest films, period.
I'd like to attribute Moreno's success to some first-class mentorship from an experienced and travelled director, but even more impressive than Moreno's debut is the fact that she's being directed by a newcomer too. This is Joshua Marston's first feature film, having tried his hand once as the director of a short film and, before that, as a journalist and teacher. No, there's no explaining how Maria Full of Grace succeeds in trumping even the best work from some of the world's most important directors, at least not in conventional wisdom.
We're likely familiar, at least vaguely, with the practice of smuggling drugs, and so Maria Full of Grace is largely conventional, at least in that respect. Where it excels is in its treatment of the topic. The film finds a very real human aspect and succeeds in creating a real sense of plight, struggle and tension. Maria Full of Grace is certainly not the first story to attach a human drama to drug trafficking but, unlike many before it, we're challenged to put ourselves in Maria's place and fully understand the journey she's taking.
And as she takes that journey, we follow. Having swallowed some one-hundred pellets full of heroin, Maria boards her plane and we're witness to one of the tensest scenes ever played out. There are exchanges of dialogue, but we're largely accompanied by the monotonous sound of a plane as Maria makes her journey; a look in her eyes of true fear that'll remain long after the credits roll.
Maria Full of Grace is a wonderfully important film. In Joshua Marston and Catalina Sandino Moreno we're introduced to two of the brightest talents only now discovered. This is one film that simply can't be missed.
