Pero, sin previo aviso, un grupo extremista palestino conocido como Septiembre Negro entró en la Ciudad Olímpica, mató a dos miembros del equipo olímpico israelí y se hizo con nueve rehenes. El tenso enfrentamiento y la trágica matanza productos del secuestro fueron retransmitidos en directo en todo el mundo y acabó 21 horas más tarde. La terrible operación de venganza conocida por los israelíes como “Operación Cólera de Dios”, fue el complot para asesinar más osado y agresivo de la historia moderna. El protagonista de la historia es un joven agente secreto israelí, Avner. Uno de sus superiores en el Mosad, llamado Ephraim, habla con Avner, que sigue dolido y furioso por el salvaje atentado, para proponerle una misión sin precedentes en la historia de Israel. Le pide que abandone a su esposa embarazada, que olvide su identidad y desaparezca de la faz de la tierra para cazar y matar a los once hombres acusados por los servicios secretos israelíes de haber planeado la matanza de Munich. A pesar de su juventud y de su falta de experiencia, Avner no tarda en convertirse en el líder de un equipo de cinco miembros tan diferentes como hábiles: Steve, un surafricano temerario y duro es el conductor; Hans, un judío alemán experto en falsificar documentos; Robert, un fabricante belga de juguetes reconvertido a fabricante de explosivos; y Carl, un hombre silencioso y metódico que se encarga de “limpiar” cuando los demás se van. Desde Ginebra, Frankfurt, Roma, París, Chipre, Londres hasta Beirut, Avner y su equipo viajan de incógnito, buscando a cada uno de los objetivos incluidos en una lista secreta, asesinándolos uno a uno mediante complicados complots.
