"For centuries, mathematicians and scientists debated over one of the greatest mysteries in the world: what, exactly, is the shape of the universe? The French mathematician Henri Poincaré made the first inroads in this new field of study with his groundbreaking, turn-of-the-century 'Poincaré Conjecture,' a theory that may have profound implications for our understanding of the universe. THE SPELL OF THE POINCARÉ CONJECTURE explores the numerous and famous attempts by mathematicians around the world to establish a full proof to the Poincaré Conjecture. The documentary features remarkable graphic visions of the mathematical concepts, as well as interviews with prominent mathematicians from around the globe. The Poincaré Conjecture has driven many mathematicians to the point of obsession; several have devoted their entire careers to the effort of establishing a full proof. Some have even spiraled into the brink of madness.
A reclusive Russian genius named Grigori Perelman offered an innovative proof to the world in 2002, and was awarded the Fields Medal, mathematics’ highest honor. Perelman refused the award, resigned from his research institute and almost completely disappeared from society. THE SPELL OF THE POINCARÉ CONJECTURE features interviews with people who knew and worked with Perelman, as well as commentary from prominent mathematicians from New York University, Columbia University, Princeton University and Stanford University. With a story that spans heartbreaking defeats and awe-inspiring triumphs, THE SPELL OF THE POINCARÉ CONJECTURE is a fascinating look back at a century of intellectual struggle over one of mathematics’ greatest puzzles."
