Description

El protagonista es James Roday en el papel de Shawn Spencer, un joven asesor de la policía que resuelve crímenes gracias a sus grandes dotes de observador y a una excelente memoria lo que hace creer a la gente que es un psíquico y él no les saca de esa idea.
Las dotes de Shawn son heredadas de un padre policía Henry (Corbin Bernsen) que le enseñó su profesión desde muy joven cuando vivía en Santa Bárbara pero de la que él no se interesó por ser un joven demasiado informal para el trabajo. A pesar de los deseos de su padre para que se convirtiera en detective Shawn sólo logró vagabundear por diversos trabajos y no tener demasiado éxito, pero a pesar de eso nunca dejó de lado sus habilidades y solía llamar á la policía aportando datos para resolver delitos que conoce por las noticias. Tras aportar una de esas pistas está es tan certera que la policía cree que ha de estar implicado y lo arresta, por ello usando sus dotes y su talento y tratando de evitar ir a prisión les hace creer a todos que es psíquico. Aunque en principio nadie lo toma en serio gracias a su aparente capacidad termina siendo contratado por la policía como asesor.
Aquí comienza la verdadera trama de la serie en la cual conoceremos a Gus (Dule Hill), su mejor amigo, con el cual irá resolviendo casos (siempre manteniendo su máscara) y con el que continuará manteniendo su falsa identidad.
Shawn abre una agencia de detectives bajo el nombre "Psych" que tiene un significado relacionado con la serie ya que este era el nombre usado como un argot de taquigrafía por los estudiantes de psicología desde 1895, aunque "psych" que en español viene siendo “psique” también hace referencia a otra definición de psíquico menos usada, aquel que usa su memoria para fingir ser lo que no es. Como Gus indica, el término "psych", por sí mismo, comúnmente es usado en referencia a la interjección de los años 1980, significando "gotcha" que se acerca más al término español trampa.
Datos curiosos:
· La canción que se utiliza en la serie como tema principal se titula “Yo sé, tú sabes” y también es obra del creador de la serie Steve Frank y su banda Friendly Indians.
· El toyota de la serie es un Toyota Yaris, que si bien es muy popular en Canadá este modelo concreto de Yaris no se vende en Estados Unidos, donde supuestamente transcurre la serie.
· El protagonista es la otra cara del espejo de Johnny Smith, el protagonista psíquico de La zona muerte, en lo que podría ser una comparación de sus respectivos talentos. Además Gus puede ser un reflejo perfecto del amigo de Johnny antes su preparador físico Bruce Lewis. También la relación de Shawn con el departamento de policía de Santa Bárbara recuerda mucho a la de Johnny con el mismo departamento pero de Cleaves Mills. La zona muerta está inspirada en la novela de Stephen King que ya había servido como base para la película de David Cronenberg del mismo título protagonizada por Christopher Walken en 1983.
· La serie también toma prestado elementos de la mitología de Sherlock Holmes; la capacidad de Shawn de deducir crímenes de los detalles más obscuros lo pone firmemente en el papel de Sherlock, con Gus como su Watson, con Lassiter, O'Hara, y Vick en los papeles de los inspectores de Scotland Yard que eran ayudados por Holmes.
