The Classical Jazz Quartet Play Rachmaninov [2006.JAZZ]
As high-concept ideas go, "jazz-Rach" is one to scare off the hipsters; the very concept of swinging improvisations based on themes from Rachmaninov's second piano concerto in C minor seems tacky or out of touch. Yet, as with many such initiatives, it's not always what you do as the way you do it. And the CJQ, with veterans Kenny Baron (piano) and Ron Carter (bass) alongside the younger Stefon Harris (vibes /marimba) and Lewis Nash (drums) can do it. The CJQ appears to have modelled itself on the MJQ (Modern Jazz Quartet); the idiom is cool and timeless. The four improvisers address Rachmaninov's robust tunes with a healthy mix of respect and insouciance, but thankfully no irony. The result is music that works whether you know the original concerto or not (though the opening of the second movement may sound over-familiar owing to pop plundering). There are jolts to the system, such as hearing a theme from the first movement reconfigured as a slow, late-night blues, but Baron and his accomplices execute their makeovers with such elegance that you can't help being charmed.
