You probably need the right codec. If you don't have them, install DivX, Xvid, and ac3 Filter. With those installed there's nothing I can't play.

no problem for me playing on windows media player (v.9) video quality is good, audio sync is a little bit off (not terrible)

installing real player can also solve codec issues as that software has many codecs which we cant get normally. I have real player 11 and K-lite codec pack 2.7 installed on my pc, and there is not even 1 kind of movie file that I've found so far, which I cant run.(I didn't install the ffd show or xvid bla bla famous codecs)

Yaeh if you convert it to dvd format, with any decent dvd con verter, i use vso divxtodvd or cucusoft avi to dvd...
