Tom Cruise spelar den frånskilde hamnarbetaren, Ray Ferrier, som inte alltid tagit sitt faderskap på fullast allvar. Nu ska han ta hand om tonårssonen Robbie (Justin Chatwin) och dottern Rachel (Dakota Fanning) över helgen.
Plötsligt slår en kraftfull ljusblixt ner i närheten av Rays hem och under loppet av några minuter blir han och barnen vittne till händelser som kommer att förändra deras liv för alltid. En trebent krigsmaskin reser sig ur marken, och innan någon hunnit reagera har den förintat allt och alla i sin närhet.
Ett märkligt ljusfenomen har i ett slag förvandlats till en inledande attack i ett krig med utomjordingar, som hotar att förinta världen.
